International Women’s Day is held annually on the 8th March. It is an International day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
Inspiring Change is the theme for 2014 and encourages the advocacy for women’s advancement throughout the world. It aims to promote a greater awareness of women’s equality and the movements inspiring positive change.
Whilst International Women’s day recognises and celebrates the positive gains that have been made in relation to women’s equality, it also focuses world attention on areas that require further action. Unfortunately the world is still unequal, especially with regards to family and domestic violence. 1 in 3 women will be the victim of family and domestic violence at some point in their lives. Whilst it is not exclusively violence against women, domestic violence is certainly a gendered crime and women are predominantly the victims. Domestic Violence is one of those areas that requires further action in order to achieve equality, safety and full empowerment for women.
Midland Information, Debt and Legal Advocacy Service Inc (MIDLAS) provides a legal service exclusively dedicated to assisting and empowering victims of domestic violence. Through the support, information, referrals and court representation provided by the MIDLAS Legal Service, victims of domestic violence are empowered to navigate their way through this highly emotional aspect of the law and are equipped with the right information to ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
In line with this year’s theme of Inspiring Change, the work undertaken by MIDLAS plays an instrumental role in advocating the advancement of women in our community and inspiring positive change.
At MIDLAS, we join the community this week to celebrate International Women’s Day, the achievements of women and the important work of many services that contributes to the further empowerment of women throughout our society.
MIDLAS would like to share the invitation to become involved in the events of International Women’s Day that are being held this weekend.
