MIDLAS (Midland Information Debt and Legal Advocacy Service Inc) is a not for profit community legal centre assisting people in the east metropolitan region of Perth who are experiencing hardship, financial stress or other disadvantage.
MIDLAS aims to promote the principles of human rights and social justice through individual casework, systemic reform, community development and education. We offer information and advocacy regarding tenant’s rights, financial counselling, disability advocacy and legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.
Our Services Include:
·Legal ServiceOur legal serviceprimarily assists victims of family and domestic violence but also offers initial assistance and advice in family law (not property), criminal injuries compensation and other matters. Existing clients of our other services can also access legal support through internal referral.
·Tenancy ServiceThe tenancy service provides information and advocacy for tenants both in private rental and public housing. We provide information and advocacy regarding tenants’ rights and work with property owners to negotiate an improved outcome for the tenant. We advocate on behalf of public housing tenants with regard to tenancy issues and can provide assistance to access the public housing appeals system and other processes. Where appropriate we will provide court representation if the tenant is unable to advocate for themselves.
·Financial CounsellingFinancial Counselling offers assistance to people on a low income with budgeting, debts, negotiating with creditors and other options. If you are struggling due to a change of circumstances such as losing your job, a financial counsellor may be able to advocate on your behalf in order to alleviate financial hardship.
·Disability AdvocacyOur disability advocacy service provides individual advocacy for persons with a disability regarding their rights, including access to services, discrimination, alleged abuse and neglect. We also seek to advocate on behalf of people with disability for issues that need systemic reform.
·Emergency ReliefWe provide assistance for people to maintain connection to essential utilities, such as electricity, gas and telephone. We also provide pharmacy assistance for urgent medical needs as assessed by the duty officer and have blankets available for people in need. Please note MIDLAS does not provide food vouchers. Emergency relief assistance is available by appointment only.
